The scripts and the data are open

Everything that produced a number on this site — the collection scripts, the raw output, the analysis — is published under an open licence: MIT for code, CC0 for data. Run it, fork it, contradict us with it. No permission needed and no attribution required.

That is not generosity. A claim that our numbers can be checked is worth nothing if checking them requires our permission.

The articles you may republish, on four conditions

The text and images of articles are ours. You may republish them in full or in part, in any medium, commercial or not, if all four of these hold:

  1. A link to the original in the first two paragraphs — not in the footer. “Originally published at https://afterbuild.dev” is enough.
  2. The republished page carries noindex, or a canonical link back to us if you would rather. Either is fine; agreeing which one is not optional.
  3. Numbers and conclusions are not altered. Cut freely, but do not restate a finding as something we did not find.
  4. The “what this doesn’t show” section stays in. Every article has one. Publishing our results without the limits that qualify them misrepresents the work, and that is the one thing we will ask you to take down.

Why noindex rather than canonical

For syndicated content, the current advice is for the republishing site to mark the copy noindex rather than rely on a canonical link. We will say plainly where that comes from: it is what Google has communicated for syndicated news and what the SEO press reported when the guidance changed — Google’s own page about canonical URLs does not mention syndication at all. So noindex is our first preference, and a canonical link is perfectly acceptable if you prefer it.

Translation

Same four conditions, plus a note to us first — only so that we can link to your translation from the original, which is in both our interests.

Training

Using the articles as training data for a model is not covered by this permission. Ask.
